Review of Walter Mosely's The Wave

This book was a bit of a departure from some of his previous books that I have read. It starts out as a story of a man struggling with his every day demons and an unhappy family life.

It quickly turns into a mystery as late night phone calls from a young man begin. They are very ominous calls that start with just a word or two. “Cold, So Cold, Naked”.

This begins a mystery that becomes a nightmare for the main character Errol Porter and mixes in science fiction/fantasy. The story takes you along with Errol as he becomes a captive of a madman and escapes and is recaptured throughout the story.

The strange caller becomes a large influence in Errol’s life and makes him question who this stranger really is. Is he who he says or is he some malevolent presence.

Although this was quite different from other Walter Mosley’s works, his writing style is fluid and the story kept me guessing until the end. There are some rather graphic scenes, both violent and sexual that certainly make this an adults only book. I completely enjoyed it, however, and recommend it to those who like something different in a mystery.
